West Indies pace ensures cricket whitewash

NZPA-ReuterSt John’s, Antigua The all-conquering West Indies cricketers completed a second successive 5-0 whitewash with a 240run victory over England on the final day of the fifth test at Antigua yesterday. The home side’s fearsome pace attack, admirably assisted by the offspinner, Roger Harper, (three for 10), skittled out England for 170 after they were set the daunting task of making 411 to win. Malcolm Marshall took his twenty-seventh wicket of the series when he trapped Paul Downton leg before, and to seal the triumph was named man of the series for the third consecutive time. The man of the match award went to the West Indies captain, Viv Richards, whose record-break-

ing century in 56 balls on Wednesday put the match beyond England’s grasp. The tourists began the day at 33 for two and the overnight pair of Graham Gooch and Richard Ellison held out for more than an hour. But when Garner removed the obdurate Ellison, England collapsed and lost their last eight wickets for 86 runs. The England captain, David Gower, who topscored with 90 in the first innings and made 21 yesterday, afterwards praised the West Indies “for doing a magnificent demolition job on us.” Richards said: “It’s been a hard, gruelling tour ... the guys stuck to the task.” The victory, the West Indies’ tenth in a row over England, was built round their first innings

of 474 and a rapid 246 for two declared in the second. WEST INDIES First innings 474 Second innings 246/2 dec. ENGLAND First innings 310 Second innings G. A. Gooch lbw b Holding. 51 W. N.
