Defeat of bill feared

PA Auckland The A.I.D.S. Foundation says it will be disastrous if Parliament throws out Part I of the Homosexual Law Reform Bill, which decriminalises consenting sexual activity in respect to males over 16. The foundation’s chairman, Ms Kate Leslie, said members were deeply concerned about the defeat of Part II of the bill, which would have made it unlawful to discriminate against homosexuals. Loss of that section, she said, would weaken and hamper the prevention programme the foundation was about to start, because it would not be able to reach people society labelled criminals. “They, will keep away from even the most sensitively designed prevention programmes because they are fearful of disclosure,” she said. “Some people are fearful of being seen reading material about A.LD.S. in case they are accused of being gay, or having a gay husband or son.” Ms Leslie said the defeat of Part II was a big blow.
