Two-month limit for fires likely

People in Canterbury’s clean air zone may be able to light rubbish fires outside only in April and September in the future. Last evening the Canterbury United Council’s air pollution committee approved an amendment to the clean air zone order of 1984, which would limit rubbish burning to the two months. At present the amendment applies to the Heathcote, Riccarton, and

Waimairi areas, but changes will be made to include Eyre, Kaiapoi, Paparua and Rangiora. The Heathcote, Riccarton and Waimairi councils will now be asked to adopt the amendment as part of their clean air zone orders. The Christchurch City Council has decided to limit outdoor rubbish fires in its area to March, April, September and October.
