Rough gems dearer
NZPA-Reuter London De Beers said that its Central Selling Organisation will increase the price of rough gem diamonds by an over-all iy 2 per cent at its next sale on May 6 — the first rise in three years. A De Beers spokesman said the rough diamond market had continued the recovery that began in the second half of 1985, and the group therefore decided the market could absorb the price rise. The CSO’s last increase was 3y 2 P e r cent in The ' C. 5.0., which markets rough diamonds on behalf of the De Beers mines and other producers, is reported to account for some four-fifths of rough diamond sales world wide. Demand has been broadening into larger, better quality stones. Prices for polished stones are firming all the time, the spokesman added. The market has been helped by the good year for cutting centres in Israel in 1985. But the investment diamond market for top quality flawless stoneg-re-mains dormant. This fciarket peaked in 1980.
