Gulf of Sirte action
Sir,—The self-styled “most powerful nation on earth” conducts totally unnecessary air and naval “exercises” five times in less than three months near the coast of a country of less than three million people and then expects the world to accept its weak excuse of exercising its rights to the open ocean. When the inevitable confrontation and loss of life occurs, our TV news gives the slanted American version of events and shows an American State Department spokesman gloating that “Gadaffi’s nose has been bloodied.” Both Libya and America have reacted childishly in this situation — one as an arrogant bully and the other trapped by its own bellicose rhetoric. I long for the day when such macho behaviour is buried for ever and the time, money and effort so uselessly expended is devoted instead to the advancement of human welfare.—Yours, etc., M. T. MOORE.
