U.K. historian seen as Hitler apologist
PA Wellington The controversial British historian, David Irving, in New Zealand on a speaking tour, “is nothing but an apologist for Hitler’s genocide,” according to the Jewish Council.
Mr Peter Wise, chairman of the council, said that Mr Irving was known to have close links with extreme Right-wing groups in Britain, the United States and Germany. “These groups are antisemitic and anti-black,” he said.
"Irving’s closest links
would appear to be with those fringe elements who are concerned with rehabilitating Hitler and Nazism, and his outspoken views have led to his being denied speaking platforms on several occasions,” Mr Wise said. Mr Wise said Mr Irving commonly made controversial statements to generate news media interest. “Hence his outrageous statements about Hitler. Irving is nothing but an apologist for Hitler’s genocide.”
Mr Wise said the council believed that New Zealanders would “see Irving for what he is.”
