Support for union
Shed meetings of meat workers throughout New Zealand have so far shown almost unanimous support for the Meat Workers’ Union in its struggle to get a 15.5 per cent wage rise for its members. In Canterbury, meetings at Islington, Pareora, Smithfield, C.F.M. Canterbury, and Kaiapoi had all expressed strong support for the union stand, said the Canterbury branch organiser, Mr Charlie Knowles. He said that the union’s revised claim did not
translate at a flat $35 a week as reported, but between $4O and $45 a week. * ■ Workers at the C.F.M. Belfast works will meet on Monday and the Marlborough works on Wednesday. - The secretary of the West Coast North Island branch of the union, Mr Ken Findlay, said that meetings throughout New Zealand were returning 95 to 98 per cent votes in favour of continuing the industrial action, the , Press Association reported.
