Mining priority
Sir,—A team comprising, in-? credibly, solely officials with? former mining interests is re- 3 viewing the mining legislation. It' is imperative that mining be; made subject to the Town and) Country Planning Act. A graphic? example of the present unsatis-, factory situation, when mining? takes precedence over all, con-; cerns scheelite (tungsten ore)? mining on Crown leasehold land: in the high country at the head of Lake Wakatipu. Mining istaking place on steep, unstable; slopes which have been retired* from grazing because of the.erosion risk. The runholder, Lands and Survey Department,; Otago Catchment Board and; Nature Conservation Council, all? have expressed concern at the? damage being caused, which is, far greater than that from any overgrazing by (non-permitted)i sheep. Until this privileged treat-.? ment of mining is brought to an: end, no matter what “treasures”, are claimed to lie buried, so long will mining’s image be suspect to’ the general public.—Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. Wellington, March 17, 1986.
