Penguin pictures
Photographs of the world’s rarest penguin will be on display in Wellington this week. Dean Schneider, photographer and Adele Vernon, a writer, have combined to present an exhibition of shots of the hoiho, yellow-eyed penguin and also of the Solomon Islands.
The hoiho photographs are sponsored by Trusteebank Southland and the Solomon Islands shot by the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society.
The subtitle for the latter pictures is “Destroying the rainforests mean destroying a high quality, traditional lifestyle.” Dean Schneider lives in
Waimahaka in Southland. During the last five years he has made the transition from amateur photographer to professional. The inspiration behind this change is the exciting and unique plants and animals of New Zealand which he has been studying and photographing. Schneider and Vernon, will publish articles and books about New Zealand’s unique natural history later this year.
Schneider and Vernon’s poster of hoiho has been published by Ashton-Scho-lastic. In all 17,000 copies will be distributed throughout New Zealand as part of Ashton-Scholas-tic’s school book clubs. The New Zealand Gov-
ernment has been keen to publicise the plight of hoiho, which is found only in New Zealand. At present there are seven exhibitions of Dean Schneider's photographs at New Zealand embassies and consulates on three continents in Perth, Brisbane, Singapore, Ottawa, San Francisco, New York and Washington D.C. One set of photographs is being shown in Chicago to complement Te Maori Exhibition. Some of Schneider’s photographs of Hoiho are shown in the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand’s February ’B6 magazine as well as on the front and back cover.
