Pornography
Sir,—Three practical suggestions for curbing the trade have emerged from the spate of letters since mine of February 18. (1) Readers to write to their members of Parliament to exoress their concern, presumably with a view to (2) obtaining legislation for stricter censorship criteria, and a more realistic approach to cover films, television programmes, videos and literature. (3) Touch the profits of pornographers. The Government could clap a heavy surtax on any material that passes the censor because of so-called aesthetic value. Further suggestions are public protests to theatre distributors and the Broadcasting Corporation indicating that degenerate material will be boycotted. Business firms to refuse advertisements for degenerate films and television programmes, as has proved effective in the United States, and a ban on the production of pornography in New Zealand. As Susan Taylor wrote, “Now is the time for action.” — Yours, etc., H. G. ORAM. March 10, 1986.
