Technicians from Japan

Sir,—A New Zealand company is hoping to recruit dissatisfied Japanese technicians (“The Press,” March 12). What is wrong with New Zealand that we have to import technicians, child specialists, tour guides, shop assistants, trade union spokespersons, university specialists, soccer players, and now bored Japanese technicians? Kiwis are

people too. Three Japanese tourists were recently rescued at a North Island beach. Should we not now be seeking Japanese life-savers as well? Along with all our other failings our surf life-savers cannot possibly hope to understand the Japanese culture, etc., and should therefore be replaced immediately with the “real thing.” Any Government which allows a shortage of skilled technicians (how bad is the shortage?) to be .filled by imitations from overseas, rather than investing in its own education system and its own people, should itself be replaced. How about some imported politicians for starters? — Yours, etc., A. McLAUCHLAN. March 15, 1986.
