Dr Graeme Hardy, the curator of reptiles at the National Museum, Wellington, with an 80cm yellow-bellied sea snake found near an Opotiki beach by two boys. The tropical reptile, usually found in the Pacific islands or on the east coast of Australia, was taken to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, which killed it by blast-freezing. It has an extremely toxic venom which can be fatal within two minutes.
