Sydney, not Awapuni, for Canterbury Belle
By
J. J. BOYLE
Canterbury Belle will not run in the Awapuni Gold Cup on Saturday.
She will be flown out of Auckland for Sydney next Tuesday and will be prepared for the $250,000 Doncaster Handicap at Randwick on March 29. The Riccarton-trained speedster. has been entered for the 1500 m $30,000 Queen of the Turf
Stakes at Rosehill on March 22, but her partowner, Mr Nick Wigley, said yesterday that it was more likely that the four-year-old would go straight into the Doncaster. “She’s done well since her race at Trentham, and Grant Cooksley is confident of a good run in the Doncaster if she gets a firm track,” Mr Wigley said yesterday. Canterbury Belle will
be accompanied to Sydney by the three-year-old filly, The Thief, whose main mission will be the $175,000 A.J.C. Oaks, but could have a lead-up race in the Storm Queen Stakes at Rosehill next week.
The Riccarton pair will be in charge of Mrs Jan Kerr and will be based at the Warwick Farm stable of the former New Zealander Harold (Speed) Riley.
