Private enterprise
Sir,—M. Creel has only to consult any New Zealand Year Book to see that the amount taken from private enterprise in company and indirect taxes far exceeds the amount paid out in subsidies. Far from being signs of a commitment to supporting private enterprise, the subsidies are a sign of muddled socialistic thinking in Governments back to the 19305. Subsidy and protection have led to inequity, stagnation and finally, disaster when reality has to be faced. Farming is in its crisis because of a surfeit of Government support in the past, not a lack of it now. Astute socialists should not complain too loudly about this situation, it is the surest way to destroy a free society and replace it with a socialist model. — Yours, etc., N. B. DAVIES. March 10, 1986.
