Pastoral leases

Sir,—The chairman of Federated Farmers’ High Country Committee suggests (“The Press,” March 7) the Land Development and Management Corporation should be flexible in not having a hard-nosed commercial approach to the high country, in understanding the emotional issues involved for pastoral leaseholders, in convincing leaseholders that land that can never be productive should be reserved, and in making decisions on the difficult issues of access. It would need further to attract people with expertise to fulfill these difficult tasks. Mr is whistling iij the

wind. The Minister of Finance has made it abundantly clear, the Land Corporation will “not be constrained by non-commer-cial policies and statutes” which “restrict economic performance.” The Government has unwisely rejected the integration of conservation and development. The choice now is between a lean, fully-commercial corporation or the Department of Conservation. Runholders would be better advised to lobby for an acceptable accommodation within the latter.—Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. Wellington, March 9, 1986.
