Democracy
Sir,—lf, like me, one believes firmly, even passionately, in democracy, one must be forgiven for thinking that democracy is dead, both nationally and internationally. Nationally, the farmers, a private occupational group, have just told our Government how to govern by demanding a 10 per cent cut in Government spending, or else. They seem to forget that everybody’s standard of living is being eroded in times of economic emergency. Internationally, the United States is definitely threatening trade sanctions against New Zealand for deciding what ships may or may not berth in our ports. France is doing likewise for the imprisoning of two people convicted of manslaughter. The United States and France are considered Free World countries. It would be difficult for the Soviet Union or any other of the numerous dictatorships to beat these dictatorial actions. Are there any truly democratic countries left? — Yours, etc., M. MAYER.
