Minister sued for defamation

The Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Hercus, is being sued for defamation by the founders and trustees of the Christchurch Battered Women’s Support Group, Dr John Church and Mrs Doris Church.

They have filed a writ in the High Court each claiming $75,000 in damages, costs, and any other relief as may seem just.

- The action arises from comments made by Mrs Hercus on an "Eye-Wit-ness News” television programme on September 24, in which she responded to statements published in a booklet called “The Future of Refuge in New Zealand.”

The plaintiffs seek an urgent hearing of the case.
