Police riots quelled
NZPA-Reuter Cairo Rioting by mutinous Egyptian police conscripts, which left 15 people dead and hundreds wounded, appeared to have petered out yesterday after soldiers with tanks and heavy weapons stifled resistance. More than 24 hours after flash riots erupted in the Pyramids suburb of Giza, the President, Mr Hosni Mubarak, facing his toughest challenge since coming to power 4}4 years ago, announced on television that the violence was under control.
He called the perpetrators “saboteurs” and said they would be severely punished. Ringleaders had been arrested and were under interrogation, he said.
Mr Mubarak said there was also rioting in Ismailia, on the Suez Canal and in Asslut, and Sohag, on the Nile River, 300 km south of Cairo.
