Zone mooted for wreckers

A special zone for car wreckers and scrap yards might be included in the Christchurch City Council District Scheme after its third review.

The zone was suggested yesterday by Cr Mollie Clark, who has long battled against unsightly wreckers’ yards in the city.

The scheme’s third re-

view is due. The City Planner, Mr Bill Williams, is on leave to do preliminary work on the review. He noted Cr Clark’s suggestion, made at a meeting of the council’s townplanning committee yesterday. Such a zone would not solve the problem of yards which had existinguse rights, he said.

There were other "noxious” uses of properties that could be covered by a special zone, Mr Williams said. The law calls for a review of the District Scheme every five years. The council’s second review is already seven years past although it is not yet operative because of outstanding appeals.
