Marsden strike looms

PA Whangarei Subcontracting staff at Marsden Point have voted to give 14 days notice of industrial action. A spokesman for the site unions at the oil refinery expansion project said yesterday that about 200 James Watt (N.Z.), Ltd, employees voted on take action because their tax-free allowances were lost. A further 300 .workers for three other subcontractors could also take action, he said.

The uproar began when workers learned they could face bills up to $12,000 for back-tax on their 1984-85 tax returns. The back tax is payable on living-away and accommodation allowances which several of the project’s subcontracting firms in the last four years viewed as tax-free. Because the employers failed to make the allowance deductions week by week, their employees face cumulative tax bills and the loss of tax-free allowances.
