Classes at show for deer

Deer classes, believed to be the first to be held at an Agricultural and Pastoral show in the South Island, will be an added attraction at the Oxford show on April 5. Two classes — a pen of two yearling hinds and a pen of two yearling stags — will be held. . Because of the timing of the show a yearling class was the only one considered this year. The show committee decided to run the classes because of the growth in the deer industry and the increased numbers of deer in the Canterbury area.

Special facilities will be built for the deer classes. Mr Mike Kean of Loburn will provide a set of his covered yards to ensure full protection for the deer. A new section for pedigree Angora goats has also been introduced this year. There will be three classes — one maiden doe, one aged doe and one kid.

The committee feels that with the addition of the two classes it will be offering all fanners in the district the opportunity to exhibit their stock. It is hoped that the new classes will be fully supported by local farmers, but the committee is also hoping that those from outside the district will also take the opportunity to take part in the new ventures. Entries close with the secretary on March 7.
