Fine-wool price setback

A limited demand for finewool two-tooths severely restricted prices at the Culverden ewe fair yesterday. Several pens of mediumsized Corriedale and Halfbred two-tooths failed to get bids, and even bigger, well-bred sheep failed to attract an enthusiastic response from buyers. Two-tooth prices were $8 to $lO down on last year’s buoyant sale and some vendors received up to $lB less than they did last year. The top price was $28.40 for a pen of very attractive Corriedale two-tooths from R. M. and R. T. Thomson, of Culverden. The Thomsons narrowly headed the Montrose Corriedales of A.F.S. and W. H. Rutherford who received prices up to $27. The Montrose offering of nearly 1200 two-tooths averaged about $25, compared with $4O last year, and attracted most interest in the two-tooth section.

Other good Corriedales sold at $2O to $25 and smaller hill sheep were $l6 to $lB, with some sales down to $l4. Annual draft ewes, which were generally in very , good order, had a successful clearance. Good early-shorn ewes sold between $l2 and $14.40 and medium condition sheep were $8 to $lO. Four-year-old Halfbreds from E. A. Shand, Culverden, reached $14.40 ($2O last year) and the well-known drafting of five-year-old Corriedales from J. R. and T. J. Burrows, Culverden, sold at $13.80 ($25.20 last year.) Shorn annual draft Corriedales and Romneys sold at $6 to $8.60.
