This afternoon, the Duke of Edinburgh will open the world’s first gas-to-gasoline K plant at Motunui north of New Plymouth. The plant has been completed ahead of schedule and under budget. But beyond that, the impact of this unique project is likely to be enormous. Using a BBS ' sophisticated process invented by Mobil, BM '" * the Motunui plant will convert Maui gas MM into petrol at the rate of 11,000 tonnes a BMW week. That adds up to some 570,000 M ' ' tonnes annually — one third of -this ■■ country’s total petrol requirements. MM As a result, New Zealand will now be less Mgl dependent on overseas supplies. The opening of the Motunui Gas-to- VIM Gasoline plant is a big step towards MM , energy self-sufficiency.
