Teachers’ salaries

Sir,—J. D. Campbell’s wild generalisations (February 22), while exposing ignorance of teaching issues and the quality of life in Britain, caused him to miss the point. To spell it out, it is a mistake to believe the pay and conditions of teachers in New Zealand are greatly superior to those of teachers in Britain. If a recruitment drive is to be made for British teachers, they should be informed that in the present economic climate they may suffer some hardship. With current mortgage interest rates up to 23 per cent and 28 per cent for first and second mortgages respectively causing hardship to many established New Zealand families, a newlyarrived teacher would be hardpressed to maintain mortgage repayments of anything over $25,000. Unless some financial assistance was available to therri, I believe that a recruitment drive for British teachers at present would be irresponsible. As a newly-arrived experienced British teacher, I have found alternative, better paid, less stressful employment.—Yours, etc.,

D. CHAMPION. February 24, 1986.
