Wellington to have concert radio trial
PA Wellington Radio New Zealand will try the concert programme on FM stereo in Wellington next week. The director-general of Radio New Zealand, Miss Beverley Wakem, said 2YC music listeners would be able to sample the Concert Programme on FM stereo during Wellington’s International Arts Festival from March 5 to March 25. The short-term FM warrant means the temporary station will broadcast on a frequency of 92.5 megahertz. No frequency has been allocated by the Post Office for the permanent FM Wellington station, which will begin broadcasting the concert programme in May.

The commercial revenue to be earned by the ZM-FM stations would help justify the investment in the non-commer-cial FM concert programme, she said.
The launch date of the new FM station is expected to be May 28, provided engineering equipment from overseas arrives on time.
The head of sports planning, Mr Ron Findlay, said sports round-up, and sporting fixtures would continue to be broadcast on the same AM frequency. He said the AM channel would be devoted to sport, Parliament, talk-back and other features. Some music was likely to be' played, but it would not be what listeners were used to.
