Iran flaunts victory

NZPA-AP Faw Iran showed yesterday that it operates freely on at least 300 sq km of the captured peninsula of Faw, disproving Iraq’S assertion that the Iranian invaders have been pushed back into a narrow wedge of land. The Iranians ferried Western correspondents to

the peninsula at the southern tip of Iraq by helicopter and ’spent two hours showing them the land they are holding against Iraqi counter-attack.

The Iranians captured the oil port of Faw within days after beginning a new offensive on February 9 in the Iran-Iraq war, now in its sixth year.

The Iraqis said repeatedly last week that they had driven the Iranians back to an area of little more than 10 Sq km around the port of Faw. But European and American correspondents were taken by truck across the width of the peninsula yesterday to within sight of the Kuwaiti island of Babiyah.
