Tight security expected
Security is expected to be tight when the Queen and Prince Philip arrive in Christchurch tomorrow afternoon.
Chief Inspector . Bob McMeeking, who is in charge of the security in Christchurch, said yesterday that he was confident the security arrangements were adequate. The police had seen what had happened so far
on the Royal tour, with incidents such as eggthrowing and buttock-bar-ing, he said. Mr McMeeking, who has been associated with tour security for about 10 years, said that he was not prepared to discuss security plans or arrangements. However, detailed planning for the tour’s security had gone on since
early last month, he said. “All my staff will be alert and prompt to respond to any misbehaviour or incidents, should they occur,” said Mr McMeeking. He declined to say how many uniformed or plainclothes police would be involved in the security. Security for the tour was regarded as a job of "highest priority.”
