Check for French brie
PA Wellington Health Department inspectors are checking importers and shops to see if any contaminated Frenchmade brie cheese has slipped into New Zealand. A report said the United States Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) had found bacterial contamination in large quantities of the cheese.
The Health Department’s assistant director of public health, Mr Jim Fraser, said he thought it unlikely that, the cheese was selling in New Zealand as apparently it had been made especially for the United States market.
“The factory responsible apparently was making cheese under a number of different brand
names for the United States market in agreement with F.D.A. standards,” herald. Mr Fraser said the “sell-by” dates on all the affected cheese had expired. The brands withdrawn in the United States, selling in one-kilo-
gram and two-kilogram wheels, were Moulin, Beaux, Villages, Joan of Arc and Esprit Nouveau.
