Woolley nominated
John Woolley, the winner of the gold medal at the last two Commonwealth Games, is one of two men to be nominated for the skeet shooting event at the Edinburgh Games later this year. The secretary of the National Rifle Association, Mr Mike Watt, confirmed yesterday that Woolley and the Dannevirke marksman, John: Farrell, have been proposed by the New Zealand Clay Target Association. Woolley, who has lived in Australia for several years but competes for New Zealand, won the
gold medal at both the Edmonton and Brisbane Games. He showed earlier this month that he remains an outstanding competitor at the highest level when he won a dramatic contest at the South Pacific championships in Brisbane. Woolley shot a perfect 100 out of 100 to force a shoot off with an American, Roger Smith, winning in the elimination with 74 out of 75, by one target The nominations of Farrell and Woolley bring to four the number received by the national association, the first two being
the fullbore representatives, Chester Burt, of Pahiatua, and Frank Godfrey, from Te Puke. Mr Watt expects to receive the smallbore nominations early next week. The national smallbore championships will end in Rotorua this weekend. The New Zealand pistol event will be held on March 8-9 and the shooting association will meet on March 19 to rank all the nominees in order of merit, before presenting the list to the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games selectors on April 8.
