Tobacco tax idea ‘appalling concept’

The call to increase the tax on tobacco products to pay for anti-smoking campaigns “is an appalling concept in an allegedly free society,” according to the executive director of the Tobacco Institute, Mr Michael Thompson. Mr Thompson said that the call, made by the Consumers’ Institute director, Mr Dick Smithies, would be “an abuse of the tax weapon

to enforce Government’s views. “It was not appropriate in New Zealand. “He (Mr Smithies) believes that smokers, having assessed the available information and chosen to exercise their free will, should be heavily taxed until they do what the Government wants them to,” said Mr Thompson. "This is an appalling concept in our allegedly free society.”
