Academy of St Albans

A Christchurch organist, who has just returned from nine months sabbatical in Europe, will be the soloist in the next concert by the Academy of St Albans orchestra. Martin Setchell will play the Salieri "Organ Concerto in C.” Mr Setchell, a senior lecturer in music at the University of Canterbury’s School of Music, visited organ festivals in England, the Netherlands and Belgium during his leave. The other soloist is Jilliam Bartram who will again join the orchestra to perform operatic arias from Mozart’s "Zaide” and “Apollo et Hyacinthus.”

The Christchurch-based Academy of St Albans is a small orchestra consisting of 10 string players, two oboes, two horns, and

various optional woodwind and brass instruments.

The orchestra was formed last year by its conductor David Vine at the request of semi-pro-fessional players and members of the public for a small chamber orchestra to complement the larger musical organisations.

The next concert by the group will be held at St Albans Methodist Church, Rugby Street on Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m., and will include works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father Leopold.

Antonio Salieri, whose jealousy of the young Mozart was depicted in the film "Amadeus” will be represented by “Symphony in D,” and the “Organ Concerto in C.”
