Tip to move stock

Farmers in South Canterbury and parts of Otago were advised to move any stock in low-lying areas to higher ground last evening as a precaution against predicted rainfall of up to 100 mm. Southerly winds bringing the rain were expected to strengthen overnight as a deepening depression moved southeastwards from Cook Strait. The Weather Office predicted that the heavi-

est rain would fall before midnight last night, and would ease over the next 36 hours.

Winds of up to 35 knots lashed Christchurch last evening, although these were expected to abate during the night.

The winds were stronger than usual but not the strength of galeforce winds, which must average 35 knots for at least 10 minutes, said a Weather Office spokesman.
