Drop-in opens

Ceremonial speeches did not mark the official opening of the Women’s Drop-In Centre in Christ-

church last evening. It had been described as an official opening but it was more like a small, friendly party. About 30 women gathered, drinks in hand with snacks poised on saucer rims, and quietly celebrated achieving a drop-in centre.

The centre, on the first floor of the Dominion Building in Cathedral Square, is run by the Women’s Refuge Centre. Its aim is to make the centre a place where

women who have suffered domestic violence can “drop in” if they need a chat or advice.

The organisation hopes to expand the centre into a women-against-violence centre, , to Include women’s groups such as Rape Crises, Incest Survivors, and Women Against Pornography. This would give all the groups a public front and allow women easier access to their ser-

vices. The drop-in centre is open between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Tuesdays to Thursdays. It is staffed by volunteers from the Women’s Refuge Centre.
