Clean sweep to Australia in 1-dayers

NZPA-AAP Brisbane

New Zealand fell victim to a lack of local knowledge yesterday as Australia made a clean sweep of the three Westpac oneday youth internationals at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.

Australia, victor in the first two one-day games in Melbourne at the weekend, won the third and final game yesterday by four wickets, scoring 202 for six off 49 overs. Earlier, New Zealand struggled to make 201 off 54 overs but it should have put Australia in first after winning the toss on a well grassed strip. “After playing in Melbourne we didn’t quite read the Gabba pitch," said New Zealand’s coach, John Howell. Australia and New Zealand meet again tomorrow in the third test to decide the Tim Caldwell Trophy. The first two tests, in Canberra and Melbourne, resulted in draws. The Australian captain, Dean Reynolds, took two fine catches in the field yesterday but did not bat as Australia coasted to victory. Reynolds was feeling slightly off colour but is confident of playing tomorrow.

Mr Howell described the one-day outing as an excellent warm-up for the deciding test. “We struggled with the bat early but Australia’s bowling was a little disappointing as well,” he said. Australia conceded 36 extras on a lively wicket, but 19 wides was far too many.

The fast bowler, Paul

Stepto, a member of Australia’s under-19 side to India and Sri Lanka last year, led the bowling with three for 42, followed by medium pacer Neil Maxwell (2/49). A confident unbeaten half-century vice-captain, Brent Oppermann, and a valuable 47 by Rockhampton’s lan Stenhouse led Australia to its third straight one-day win. The New Zealand opener, Brian Spragg, hit a valuable 43 while his partner at the top of the batting, John Wilson, pitched in with a handy 35. NEW ZEALAND J. Wilson c Palmer b Maxwell 35 B.
