Hayward omitted

PA Palmerston North Central Districts’ Shell Series captain, Richard Hayward, has been omitted from the team to play

against Australia at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, from March 8-10. With Hayward having announced his retirement at first-class level from the end of the season, the selectors are looking at next year’s side and have given the captaincy to Martin Crowe.

Manawatu’s opening batsman, Ron Hart, who has not played since the

end of January because of a broken thumb, was not selected because of his lack of recent match practice.

The team is: John Smith (Nelson), Scott Briasco (Hawke’s Bay), Tony Blaitl (Manawatu), Martin Crowe (Hawke’s Bay, captain), lan Smith (Hawke’s Bay, vicecaptain), Ross Glover (Taranaki), Stephen Robertson (Taranaki), Gary Robertson (Taranaki), Derek Stirling (Manawatu), Stuart Duff

(Hawke’s Bay), Wayne Martin (Taranaki), Peter Visser (Nelson).
