Raft inquiry ends today
Special correspondent Queenstown
A Ministry of Transport inquiry into the double rafting fatality on the Landsborough River on Sunday is not expected to be completed in Queenstown until late today.
Two Arrowtown men died when the Kawarau Rafts, Ltd, inflatable raft they were on overturned after being hit by a wave between Harpur Bluff and Strutts Bluff late on Sun-
day afternoon. The raft was carrying six other Arrowtown people, who survived the ordeal.
No details are being released until a full investigation has been held in Queenstown by the Ministry. A nautical surveyor with the Ministry’s Invercargill office, Mr Chris Cole, began the long task of hearing evidence in Queenstown at 11 a.m. yesterday. Evidence is
being heard from up to 20 persons who were passengers and guides on the week-end rafting expedition of people from the Queenstown area. The Queenstown Harbourmaster, Mr Marty Black, who is also sitting in on the inquiry, said progress had been slow so far because of the number of witnesses involved. The hearings were expected to last for at least two days.
