Not all Auckland schools get holiday
PA Auckland About a quarter of Auckland’s schools will not get the special holiday granted by the Queen on Monday, an Education Department spokesman said today. The Queen told 40,000 schoolchildren assembled at Ellerslie racecourse to welcome her on Monday that they would have a special one-day holiday. However, the department’s Auckland regional superintendent of education, Mr Pat Foley, said the holiday would be given only to those schools whose pupils attended the welcome.
“The Queen was quite specific,” he said. About a quarter of the region’s schools did not participate in the welcome and would not be eligible for the holiday, Mr Foley said.
As for the schools that did attend, individual secondary school boards would decide when they took the holiday, he sqj|.
