Deborah Jane Leyland, aged 22, a beneficiary, of Avondale, and Anne Marie Thorby, aged 20, a student, of Mount Eden, pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of assaulting the Queen. They also each denied a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner in a public place. Judge Augusta Wallace remanded them both to May 23 on $lOOO bail each with a $lOOO surety. They were also ordered to report to the police daily. During yesterday’s proceedings, a man claiming to be Leyland’s father leapt forward from the public gallery as the two women were led from the dock to the court cells.
Three policemen stopped him approaching the dock. He was believed to be carrying an egg in his hand at the time.
About 10 protesters sal in the courtroom and others held antl-tour banners outside the building.
