Berthing ship numbers up

The Port of Lyttelton has played host to 20 more ships during the last four months in comparison to the same period last year. The harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour, told the recent Lyttelton Harbour Board meeting that the increase related to trading vessels. While there had been an increase in the number of ships there had also been an associated decrease in the total net registered tonnage of 40,038 tonnes, he said. He added that while a number of foreign fishing vessels had visited the port this had mainly been for bunkering purposes prior to proceeding to areas such as the Falkland Islands where it appeared that conditions for fishing were good at present. Captain Barbour also told the meeting that the cruise ship, Royal Viking Star, had completed two visits to the port and was scheduled to visit for a third time on Saturday. The cruise ship would be in port at the same time as the Royal Yacht Britannia but Captain Barbour did not expect that there would be any congestion while the Royal vessel was here. ARRIVALS
