Marathon organ recitalist, not a busker

PA Hamilton Raymond Robbie, aged 71, is a marathon organ recitalist, not a busker. He is firm on that. Buskers usually collect for themselves. Mr Robbie never does. He collects — and handsomely — but. every cent goes to charities.

At the moment he is raising more than $3OO a day in the Hamilton area for the Crippled Children Society.

The retired Christchurch storeman’s organ recital marathon started at 9 a.m. on January 20 on the Cook Strait ferry that took him across to Wellington. The society’s local branches collect the daily takings — they are spent where they are collected. The takings are impressive. Already the total is about $5OOO, and Mr Robbie expects to have raised

$20,000 by the end of June.

He gave his first marathon organ recital 21 years ago.

Most of the voluntary fund-raising has been for Red Cross, which has recognised his efforts with an honorary life membership and its presentation shield. He raised $3200 for the last Telethon.
