Social workers’ talks ‘jeopardised’

Industrial action by social workers in the Social Welfare Department in Christchurch could jeopardise pay talks planned for Friday, said an assistant commissioner with the State Services Commission, Mr David Swallow, yesterday.

The 60 social workers were at work yesterday but withdrew their services from the courts, refused to handle new cases referred from schools except where illtreatment or neglect were involved, and refused to do rostered after-hours duties. The action is being taken in protest at the

offer by the commission in response to a group claim.

Mr Swallow said that the commission had made an offer which he described as "substantial.” It was in the order of 23 per cent, which included general and other pay adjustments already being paid.

The secretary of the P.S.A., Mr Colin Clark, said that the P.S.A. negotiators had made a recommendation to social workers on the offer and the response from social workers from throughout the country would be known by tomorrow.
