State spending
Sir,—l find it sad that the privileged and wealthy are calling for cuts in Government expenditure. Remembering the tax cuts they were given earlier this year and the wealth necessary to receive those cuts, I think they should offer to have their cuts cut. Why should the poor always be the ones who suffer most? How did Fletcher Challenge manage to persuade the Government not to tax those of their shareholders who elected to buy further shares at a reduced price rather than actually receive their dividends — a loss of many millions in tax to the Government? The share equivalent of the tax would have been a useful source of income for the Government too. — Yours, etc., SUSAN TAYLOR. February 18, 1986.
