Trevor Franklin surprised
Trevor Franklin was delivering beer to a hotel in Auckland when he was told to pack his bags and get to Wellington to prepare for the first test. The lanky Auckland opening batsman was called into the New Zealand team when John Wright, the experienced left-hander and vice-cap-tain, was declared unfit yesterday morning. Wright has a back injury.
“I was very surprised,” said Franklin yesterday. “I got a phone call late last night and was told to be ready if John had to pull out Then they got in touch with me about 10 o’clock this morning.” Franklin has played one test match, against England three years ago, scoring 7 and 2, but he is an experienced tourist. He went to Australia in 198283 as a replacement and again on the tour before
Christmas. He toured England in 1983 and went to Zimbabwe with the Young New Zealand side at the end of 1984. Replacing Wright is. becoming something of a habit for Franklin, who turns 24 next month. He made his test debut when Wright broke a toe, and stepped in for the Bushfire Appeal match in Australia when Wright suffered an eleventh hour injury.
