Protests force dwarf throwing cancellation
NZPA-Reuter Bonn An international dwarfthrowing competition in West Germany next month had been cancelled because of protests from small people, the organiser said yesterday. Jonny Carroll, director of the entertainment agency responsible for organising the contest, said he had called off the competition after receiving complaints from organisations for people of restricted growth in
West Germany, Britain, r and The Netherlands. He also felt that the g competitors, a British I group called Oddballs, t who use a 1.32-metre man t called Lenny the Giant as e one of their human pro- c jectiles, were not profes- t sional enough. Dwarf-throwing started i in Australia as a gimmick ( to attract customers to ( bars. Next month’s com- c petition was planned as an e entertainment for British i troops based in West Ger- i
many. The Hamburg-based Organisation of People of Restricted Growth said that it had protested to the Australian and British embassies about what it called .a macabre specMr Carroll said he planned to release a record about Lenny the Giant’s experiences in dwarf-throwing contests and part of the profits would go towards organisations for small people.
