Century today
Birthday candles will glow at Fernwood Hostel, St Albans, when its oldest resident, Mrs Ada Shapcott (above), celebrates her hundredth birthday today. Mrs Shapcott will cut her birthday cake at the hostel during a private celebration with about 30 relatives. Her son, Mr Alan Shapcott, said his mother had been looking forward to her birthday for several
months and as each week went by was more excited. Although she was blind and partly deaf, his mother was well aware of what was going on about her and was very happy, he said. She was born in London as Ada Watt, and
emigrated to New Zealand in 1915, arriving in Christchurch on June 18. Soon afterwards she was reunited with her hus-band-to-be, Mr Percy Shapcott, and they married on June 21.
The couple had six children, 12 grandchildren, and 12 greatgrandchildren. Mr Shapcott died in 1973. Mrs Shapcott has been at Fernwood Hostel for the last nine years.
