Advertisement New concern over load security The advent of deregulating the heavy transport industry has seen a tremendous increase in the tonnage of cargo carried by heavy trucks and trailers on city and urban roads up and down the country. This increase in cargo carried has unfortunately lead to a subsequent increase in loads being dropped on the roads. While the M.O.T. have been most concerned about insecure loading they have not been able to apprehend operators because a load cannot be deemed insecure until it had actually fallen onto the road. Just recently the Minister of Transport announced a new law making owners and drivers of heavy vehicles liable for accidents caused by insecure loads. Furthermore it will allow the. M.O.T. to prosecute operators with insecure and dangerous loads and give them the power to insist the load is securely tied down or off-loaded before the vehicle proceeds any further. Motor Specialties, Limited, have geared themselves to cater for the heavy transport industry’s requirements relating to this new law. Motor Specialties currently market an 8-metre cargo control webbing strap with hook and keeper ends, sewn in chaffing strips plus two loose wear sleeves using a full handwidth ratchet buckle. High tensile “grade 70” transport chain, recommended and approved for heavy duty trucking, logging, etc., to be used in conjunction with heat treated G 7 Clevis grab hooks and chain twitches either conventional or the new patented recoilless release.
