Gash along keel

PA Wellington Divers yesterday discovered a gash about 10m along the keel of the sunken Soviet cruise ship Mikhail Lermontov. Five divers — one from H.M.N.Z.S. Taupo, two from the National Film Unit, and two locals — inspected the wreck at Port Gore. The divers said the gash was right along the bottom of the ship starting about 13m from the bow. Parts of It were up to three metres wide.

Visibility was low but they could see cables floating from the ship and bottles of gin and wine, lists, and lifejackets floating up against the windows. Air bubbles were still rising from the vessel, but the oil had appeared to stop.

The divers recovered a compass from the port bridge wing and three more lifejackets. They said they were not able to get near the stem and so could not tell if there were further holes in the ship.
