Risks from oil ‘big worry*
PA Wellington The 2000 tonnes of fuel oil in the Mikhail Lermontov were enough to cause widespread damage to the marine environment, said a salvage expert, Captain Craig Harris, yesterday. Captain Harris, who was involved in the salvage of the Pacific Charger which ran aground at Baring Head in 1981, said the risk of oil pollution would now be a big concern to the Ministry of Transport It would be the priority salvage task. The Russians, he said, insured their own vessels and preferred to do their own salvage. They were generally well equipped but it could take weeks to bring ships from Europe or the North Pacific.
