Penalties for parents

Sir,—Your editorial “Penalties for parents” sets out clearly and logically the present legal situation and deals splendidly with reasons for rejecting the proposals made by Mr Paul East It fails, however, to supply any constructive ideas for dealing with the growing and frightening problem of juvenile crime. Everything has its price and secular education and freedom without responsibility is reaping its just reward. As secular education is obviously here to stay, freedom must be curtailed and all forms of violence must be eliminated as much as possible from education and entertainment. Instead, films must be made by popular people setting out the folly and painful results of crime and its harmful effects on society. Contrasts should be shown between responsible behaviour and the evil stupidity which has taken hold of society today. Only in this context should any kind of violence be depicted, and that very gingerly.—Yours, etc P. B. WYE. Blenheim, February 15, 1986.
