Perfect finish to Hadlee benefit match

PA Wanganui Richard Hadlee won his benefit cricket match in a storybook finish at Cooks Gardens, Wanganui, last night. Hadlee’s Invitation XI beat a Central Districts XI by one run with just seven balls remaining. Hadlee bowled his international team-mate, lan Smith, to end the match. He put an end to a Central Districts charge to finish with the fine figures of three for 21. For the record, Hadlee’s XI scored 269 and Central Districts replied with 268. The win for Hadlee’s team Was set up by the English professional, Dipak Patel, and the recently retired New Zealand international allrounder,Lance Calms. They played exciting innings when Hadlee’s team batted first. Patel contributed a stylish 84 and Cairns a thunderous 56. Patel played fluent shots all round the wicket in a display which contained few false shots. His off-side play was particularly strong. Cairns provided the power hitting, slamming seven sixes, hitting roofs and threatening windows. Hadlee, no mean hitter himself, scored only 10 in a partnership of 59 with Cairns. There was a feast of sixes and fours hit during the match, although : '*'<ng to match the big hitting of Cairns. Gary Robertson kept Hadlee’s team in check. He claimed John Wright’s wicket early and then returned to pick up four more wickets. The most impressive of the Central Districts bowlers, Robertson finished with five for 48 off his 10 overs.
